Fighting ants

Environmentally friendly remedies and natural solutions against ants in the house and garden

The ant

Ants are fascinating insects with complex social structures. But as soon as they appear in large numbers in the home, garden, or on the balcony, they quickly become a serious problem. Especially in summer, ants invade indoor spaces in search of food, where they not only create an unhygienic conditions but can also cause damage – for example, by undermining paving or nesting in house walls. Instead of immediately resorting to chemical weapons, sustainable, environmentally friendly methods are recommended for controlling ants and preventing infestations in the long term.

Recognizing and understanding ants: How these little insects tick

Ants belong to the order Hymenoptera and are found worldwide – over 200 species are known in Europe alone. Black garden ants (Lasius niger) are particularly common in homes and gardens. They are about 3 to 5 millimeters long, dark brown to black in color, and move in clearly structured columns. Typical ant characteristics include their segmented body with a prominent waist, curved antennae, and powerful mandibles.

Ants are usually found where they smell food: on the patio, in the kitchen, or in the compost. They are particularly attracted to sugary foods and animal proteins. In gardens, they are often active near aphid colonies, as they feed on the honeydew produced by the aphids.

From egg to colony: The life cycle of the ant

The life cycle of an ant begins with the queen laying eggs. She lays hundreds of eggs daily, from which larvae and later pupae hatch. Under favorable conditions (warm and humid), development into an adult worker ant takes approximately 6 to 8 weeks.

After maturation, specialized roles emerge: workers, queens, and males. Once a year – usually in midsummer – the so-called nuptial flight takes place: the sexually mature ants leave the nest, mate in the air, and then establish new colonies. An ant queen can live up to 15 years, which explains the longevity and stability of an ant colony.

Signs of an infestation: When action is required

An ant infestation can usually be detected quickly:

  • Ant trails lead from nests to food sources – particularly noticeable in kitchens, pantries or on terraces.
  • Soil or piles of sand at joints and cracks indicate nesting sites under paved surfaces.
  • Increased activity near plants may indicate a symbiosis with aphids.
  • Bite marks or even minor damage to food occur in cases of severe infestation.
  • As soon as these signs become visible, you should take targeted action – preferably using natural and sustainable methods.
