1. General information about cherry fruit flies
The cherry fruit fly (Rhagoletis cerasi) is the most significant pest of cherries. The flies are only about 4–5 mm in size, black with yellow markings, and resemble small houseflies. The problem arises from the larvae (maggots) : The females lay their eggs directly into ripening cherries. The hatching maggots feed on the fruit flesh from the inside, rendering the cherries inedible.
An infestation can destroy entire harvests. What's particularly dangerous is that a female can lay up to 200 eggs, which quickly leads to massive pest pressure.
